Mental Health Center
The mission of the Mental Health Center is to improve the lives of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and their families by providing the utmost quality mental health/substance abuse services via treatment, prevention and education utilizing qualified professionals - all in a culturally sensitive and respectful manner.

Scope of Work: The Mental Health staff provides services on the Qualla Boundary as well as Cherokee County and Snowbird. Their services include: individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, stress reduction, relaxation training, anger management, psycho-educational assessments, Batterer’s Re-education, EMDR, in-patient consults, training/education in-services, consultations with other programs.

2003 Accomplishments:

  • 3954 patient contacts from 8/02-7/03
  • Rich Panther, Outpatient Therapist, obtained his LCSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
  • Dr. Marie Wilkie, Child & Adolescent psychologist, was chosen by the American Psychological Association to participate in their Minority Fellowship Program/Psychology Summer Institute and to serve as an I H S grant reviewer.
  • Dr. Patricia McClanahan held a 2 day Project Making Medicine Site-visit workshop, prevention of child abuse & neglect which had 141 registered participants.
  • Betty Smith, petition caseworker, assisted with 32 petitions for Involuntary Commitment from 8/02-7/03.
  • Increased provision of mental health/substance abuse services at other locations:

  • First Group of Batterer’s Re-education Treatment participants completed 27 week program, a 60% completion rate.
