Healthy Cherokee
The mission of Healthy Cherokee is to promote healthy, safe, drug free communities through community mobilization and increasing awareness.

Scope of Work: Health Cherokee promotes health education, substance abuse prevention education, health promotion, and injury prevention education to the local elementary school and high school, worksites, child care centers, recreation centers, as will as individual communities. Programs offered include: Junaluska Leadership, Encephalitis Education, Proper Hand washing education, Smoking Prevention, Teens as Smoking Prevention Educators, etc. Activities include: Easter, SAFE KIDS Trick-or-Treat Night, Red Ribbon Week, and the Great American Smokeout, Drugged and Drunk Driving Awareness Month, Prom Promise, Annual Health & Safety Day at the Cherokee Indian Fair, Bug Spray Stations.

2003 Accomplishments:

  • Began 6th grade smoking prevention education.
  • 6th graders served as peer educators for K-2 for smoking prevention.
  • All local child care centers received encephalitis education.
  • Prom Promise activities were held the entire week of the prom and we made the front page of the One Feather.
  • More people utilized the Bug Spray Station at the Varsity Football games than ever before.
  • Held the 2nd Annual Stadium Clean-up with more participants that last year.
  • Sherry enrolled in United Tribes Technical College majoring in Injury Prevention.
  • Received 10,000 from I H S to purchase safety equipment.
  • Received 1,800 from the American Legacy Foundation to conduct tobacco prevention programs for youth.
  • Sherry presented at the Health & Safety Baby Shower for the first time.
