| The office of
the Middle/High School nurse is a part of the School Health
Program from the Health and Medical Division. The School
Health Program consists of the Office of the school nurse
in the Elementary school as well as the Middle/High School
and the Qualla Youth Health Center. The High/Middle School
office consists of the school nurse and the CNA.
They are involved in the day-to-day care of the diabetic
students. They assist each student with their daily blood
sugars and insulin administration. They also assist students
with the use of their diabetic equipment, such as insulin
pumps. They comply with the Senate Bill 911 for the Care
of School Children with Diabetes. Mrs. Humphrey recently
attended inservice related to diabetes care. They also spend
much of their time counseling students on healthy choices
related to diabetes including diet and health/ life choices.
The nurse’s office is also involved in an ADHD clinic
in conjunction with Dr. Harry Brown. Last year there were
52 parent/student meetings held with teachers directly involved
with the students.
The office is also involved in teen pregnancy prevention
as well as STD prevention. The school nurse assists in teaching
health related topics in the classroom stressing abstaince
and self-esteem building. The school nurses office is also
assisting with The Making a Difference Program instituted
in the health classes, also stressing abstance and self-esteem
building.
The clinic is also involved in disease prevention in conjunction
with the acute care visits. The conduct eye and hearing
screenings, making referrals accordingly. In the 2003-2004
school year 12,066 students were seen for routine nursing
services with an emphasis on preventive health.

Mrs. Humphrey started working as an RN in Adolescent Psychiatric
Nursing at Ohio State University Hospital 36 years ago.
She has also worked for GA Mental Health and Klein Schools
in Houston, Texas. She has worked at Cherokee Middle/High
School for the last 9 years as School nurse/Prevention Specialist.
She is married and has one son who lives in Denver, Colorado.

Mrs. Fischer graduated High School four years ago where
she took Health Occupations Courses and received her CNA
license. Since then, she has worked for the Eastern Band
of the Cherokee Indians in several capacities. She worked
for a year at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino, two years
at the Cherokee Youth Center and has currently been with
the HMD for over a year, as a CNA.
