Maternity Care Coordinator
The mission of the Maternity Care Coordinator is to reduce the infant mortality rate of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians by improving access to prenatal health care and social services for pregnant women.

Scope of Work: The MCC provides advocacy and case management for pregnant women. While the primary focus in on pregnant women who are Medicaid eligible, MCC also provides these same services to non-Medicaid eligible pregnant women. Case Management requires that the MCC have minimum of one monthly contact with Medicaid eligible pregnant women. This contact may occur in the home, office, community or by phone. Advocacy involves scheduling appointments, assisting with
alternate resource information, and arranging other necessary support services.

2003 Accomplishments:

  • Coordinated with Westcare to establish childbirth classes on the Qualla Boundary
  • Collaborated with Pregnancy Support Specialist and Adolescent Parenting Program to better meet the needs of the community
  • Payment for circumcision for enrolled members is now covered by the tribe
